"My work on HIV/AIDS over the past 22 years has convinced me that social mobilisation is a crucial part of responding to the epidemic. Without this our interventions are likely to fail. This citizen's summit will enable us to make progress in developing new and innovative responses. It is over due"

Programme for the Global Citizens Summit

Star Bangladesh: Mobilising Communities in HIV Prevention

The star approach in Bangladesh focused on mobilising communities towards HIV and AIDS prevention. The state of the epidemic is concentrated among intravenous drug users, commercial sex workers and ‘mobile’ people, making these groups a critical target for the STAR interventions.

Star Malawi: Orphan and Vulnerable Children Care and Support.

When the community embraces an approach such as STAR, it is able to achieve a lot. It is in this light that communities in Malawi were able to organize themselves, grow to CBOs,mount advocacy efforts, claim and enjoy their rights.

Star Nigeria: Breaking Barriers in Northern Nigeria

The influence of the STAR approach to bring out the potential and tangible
actions by communities was well illustrated in Nigeria. Given that these
were community driven actions, they are bound to be sustained. For example,
KAPOP has become an ARV refill agent thanks to joint initiatives by circles and
KAPOP.
